Gather Heritage Farm has become a labor of love for Frank and Jackie Ritz since about 2012. Gather Heritage Farm is really still in its infancy, but the future is bright. At that time, Frank was serving in the US Army and Jackie was a stay-at-home-mother with a budding online business. In full disclosure, Frank and Jackie were not ever farmers. Not even from farming families. They were both city slickers, raised in central Florida, a far cry from rural America.
To this end, a visit to Asheville, NC in 2012, planted the proverbial “seed,” which eventually bloomed into not only a hobby homestead, but transformed into a heritage breed sustainable farm. Their desires of producing a sustainable homestead in western North Carolina has rippled through the region and Frank and Jackie want to protect these invaluable resources for others to enjoy.
Currently, Frank is now pursuing a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Education and will be using the education to provide agricultural workshops and farm tours to promote the concepts of heritage breeds and sustainable agricultural models. Jackie continues to provide an invaluable resource in an online space to others to create a movement of the same – real, local, sustainable food. Creating similar micro-cultures supporting small farming will always remain the mission of Gather Heritage Farm.
